Stay informed and up-to-date on the latest customs regulations and international trade developments. In this episode, Annik throws out three trending news articles for the week: the new rule from the US Custom and Border Protection mandating licensed custom brokers to complete 36 hours of continuing education every three years, the recent visit of Janet Yellen to China and the lack of progress achieved during the trip, and USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai's visit to Mexico to discuss USMCA.
Main Points
The episode provides information on how licensed customs brokers will require accredited courses and emphasizes the importance of being proactive in fulfilling the education requirements. Key insights include the impact on professional development, benefits of staying informed, and potential consequences of non-compliance.
We move on to skepticism surrounding high-profile visits like Janet Yellen's to China and the unresolved issue of trade tariffs. The conversation highlights potential impacts on intellectual property rights and forced labor laws, and an upcoming series on forced labor is announced.
Similarly USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai's visit to Mexico to meet with her Mexican and Canadian counterparts for USMCA discussions yielded very little news. We talk through that information and speculate on what is next on the horizon.
Don't miss this insightful episode that offers valuable insights into customs regulations and international trade.

Welcome to this weeks podcast where we discuss the challenges and requirements of doing business in Mexico from a US perspective. Today's episode focuses on the differences between Mexican and US customs brokers and why the Customs department (Import/Export team) in your Mexican facility should report to trade compliance vs. another local department that may not have the best interests of the company or the role represented by Mexican import/export team.
In Mexico, customs brokers are held jointly responsible with the importer. Which makes Mexican customs brokers more cautious in their operations. Because of that, they will hold their clients, (i.e. you, the foreign manufacturer in Mexico) to much higher standards and will work much closer with you than what you may see in the U.S.
For this reason, US companies and managers need to be aware of these distinctions and make sure that their trade team in Mexico are properly aligned with the management that has the best interests of the company and the department in mind.
In this discussion our guests argue why the various departments in a typical manufacturing operation are not well suited to manage the trade team. This includes Purchasing, Materials, Finance, or other departments that typically take responsibility for this task.
