Welcome to a new segment of the Simply Trade Podcast. We are looking to provide more information regarding trade. This new segment will summarize relevant trade stories for the week.
Annik Sobing will be hosting this segment while Andy and Lalo contribute their two cents on those news stories.
In today's episode, we'll be discussing the following topics in trade:
First up: freight theft has become a growing problem within the US supply chain. Thieves are targeting high-value goods such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages. The pandemic has disrupted global supply chains, making it more challenging for companies to implement adequate security measures.
Secondly, the US goods trade deficit has widened due to the pandemic's impact on global trade flows. There has been a decline in exports, particularly in the areas of civilian aircraft and soybeans.
Finally, the United States and Japan have reached a deal to increase the supply of electric vehicle battery minerals and reduce reliance on China. The two countries have agreed to cooperate on developing technologies to extract and process these minerals.
As companies continue to grapple with these complex issues, they must adapt and innovate to ensure they can thrive in the global marketplace. Join us as we explore these topics in more detail and discuss the implications for businesses operating in the current economic climate.
Enjoy the show.

Balancing Compliance and Opportunity: A Dilemma for Businesses with Leslie August
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
In this episode we discuss the dilemma faced by businesses when it comes to choosing between compliance and pursuing new market opportunities. Together with our guest, Leslie August, we explore the tension between these two approaches and provide insights on how individuals can navigate this tension in their roles.
Leslie talks about the concept of regulation-focus versus opportunity-focus, where one approach prioritizes compliance with regulations and the other prioritizes the pursuit of opportunities. This episode highlights the importance of striking a balance between these two approaches to ensure the long-term success of a business.
We also provide insights on how individuals in compliance roles can perform their roles differently by adopting a more proactive, opportunity-focused approach to compliance. This may involve engaging with regulators, staying up-to-date on industry trends and changes, and actively seeking out new market opportunities.
Enjoy the show.
