The future of trade is all about data - how we collect it, share it, and use it to both facilitate trade and enforce regulations. This was a key topic of discussion on today's episode featuring trade experts Amy Magnus and Cindy Allen.
Focus on Data and EntitiesThe guests agreed that in 2024, data and understanding entities (importers, manufacturers, etc.) will be hugely important. "It's really going to come down to data," said Amy Magnus. She explained how collecting and intelligently using data from all entities in a supply chain can help customs inspect high-risk shipments while expediting low-risk ones.
Piloting New Approaches New pilots are exploring how to share data earlier in the trade process using distributed ledger technology. This could provide visibility to all parties and satisfy enforcement needs upon arrival. Experts recommended importers get involved in pilots like the Global Business Identifier to help shape solutions.
Addressing Agency RequirementsThe podcast also touched on challenges different agencies like FDA pose with various import data needs. As Amy Magnus noted, meeting all these requirements currently relies on outdated paper-based systems, highlighting the need for automation.
Takeaways for ImportersKey advice for importers included understanding supply chain risks through tools like mapping, hiring compliance experts, and engaging with trade associations like nei.org, icpa.com and alex.org to stay informed on upcoming regulations. The discussion provided actionable insights on facilitating trade in line with increasing enforcement trends.

As businesses face ongoing challenges from inflation, workforce shortages and economic uncertainty, many are looking at new strategies like nearshoring to help cut costs and gain efficiencies. This episode of the Simply Trade podcast explored how implementing a nearshoring solution with the right partner can provide numerous benefits.
Defining Nearshoring Nearshoring refers to outsourcing certain business functions to locations closer to home, such as countries in Latin America. This provides advantages over traditional offshoring models that send work farther abroad. Nearshore locations like Mexico and Colombia offer similar time zones and easier travel compared to places like India or the Philippines.
Functions to ConsiderCommon roles companies nearshore include customer service, dispatching, billing/invoicing and other administrative tasks that can be performed remotely. This allows existing employees to focus on higher-level, strategic work rather than getting bogged down in repetitive processes.
The Value of PartnershipsGuests Hunter Bell and Gena Mann from Lean Solutions Group stressed that finding an experienced partner is key to success. Their company helps set up client operations nearshore, supplying a ready talent pool for roles like transportation tracking. This scalability proved vital during COVID spikes when demand fluctuated wildly.
Learning from Industry LeadersAttendees heard about the Nearshore Experience conference being held February 12-13, 2022 in beautiful Cartagena, Colombia. This event hosted by Lean Solutions Group brings together over 600 clients and other businesses. The agenda includes panels, networking and speakers addressing current challenges. It's a chance to gain insider insights from companies already implementing nearshoring strategies.
TakeawaysIn summary, leveraging the right nearshoring partner can optimize workflows, boost cost-savings and help organizations weather economic storms. The conference provides an immersive learning experience for any company exploring ways to future-proof operations through strategic outsourcing.

Join Annik as she takes on the news of the week with her co-hosts, Lalo and Andy.
Red Sea Crisis Boosts Shipping Costs and Delays Inflation
The hosts discuss how the ongoing terrorist attacks and piracy in the Red Sea region have caused freight rates from Asia to Northern Europe to double. Shipping companies are now forced to take much longer routes around the southern tip of Africa instead of using the crucial Suez Canal shipping lane. This significant increase in transportation costs and delays is rippling through global supply chains and exacerbating inflation worldwide.
US Border Entry Points Reopen as Migrant Crossings Decrease
The reopening of four US-Mexico border entry points is explored. While reduced migrant crossings allowed this, the ongoing situation is complex with immigration pressures still intense further south. Trade impacts are also considered, with the potential for future closures if crossings surge again.
CBP Export Seizures - Knowing the Rules and Consequences
This segment warns exporters to thoroughly research regulations and vet business partners to avoid costly seizures or penalties. With increased CBP enforcement in 2024, compliance is critical. Export licensing, prohibited end users, and supply chain transparency are discussed as key areas to scrutinize for international trade and customs compliance.

Because trade changes almost daily and not all topics could be covered in a full day of training, we created the Simply Trade podcast to continue to educate and inform the trade community about current changes, new information, or just about anything trade related.
We would like your feedback on what we are doing right or wrong to make the show better. Also, if you, or someone you know, would like to be a guest on the show, or would like to sponsor the show, or just want to suggest a topic for us to cover on the show, please reach out to us via email at SimplyTrade@GlobalTrainingCenter.com or via Twitter @SimplyTradePod.
We hope you enjoy the show and do not hesitate to reach out to us.
